Glenn Maxwell ends international career but stays in Big Bash

Glenn Maxwell has officially concluded his international career, choosing to step away from Test, One-Day, and Twenty20 cricket. The 38-year-old all-rounder also announced his departure from first-class and List A cricket, yet he remains committed to domestic competition by signing an extension with the Melbourne Stars that covers the 2027-28 season. Maxwell concluded his international journey with a legacy built on devastating hitting, amassing 7,226 runs and taking 136 wickets across 286 matches. His achievements include two ODI World Cup victories in 2015 and 2023, and he delivered the crucial runs that secured victory in the 2021 T20 World Cup final. Although he retired from One-Day cricket in June last year, his final match in Australian whites occurred during the February group stage elimination against Oman, where he took three wickets for 13 runs but did not bat. Maxwell had initially hoped to perform a farewell at the MCG against England in late November but accepted the selectors’ decision to prioritize young players ahead of the 2028 Olympics. During an interview on the Final Word podcast, he acknowledged the squad’s need to develop emerging talent and exposed them to international pressure over the next two years. His most celebrated innings remains the unbeaten 201 runs against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup, where he rescued Australia from 91-7 to chase a 292-run target. This performance, once the second-fastest ODI double-century, now ranks fourth after recent efforts by Harry Brook and Shubman Gill. Additionally, Maxwell broke the record for the fastest World Cup century, reaching three figures in just 40 balls against the Netherlands during the same tournament. While his domestic and international state careers have ended following his final Two-Day Cup games for Victoria in September, the former ‘Big Show’ will continue playing for global franchises.
