Donald Glover Leads Netflix’s Live-Action ‘PUBG’ Series

Netflix is advancing a live-action television series based on the iconic battle royale video game PUBG, featuring Donald Glover as the lead director and star. Glover will also pen the script and serve as an executive producer on the project, working alongside his brother Stephen Glover. The production team includes additional executives such as Michael Schaefer from Neon TV, Fam Udeorji from Gilga, and representatives from Krafton’s LV3H division, Taeseok Jang and Sujin Lee. This significant development followed extensive negotiations where Netflix successfully recruited Glover to helm the adaptation.

Glover, celebrated for his roles in Community and Atlanta, previously held an exclusive overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios after departing from FX in 2021. That agreement has since been updated into a first-look arrangement, permitting collaborations with other studios while he remains an executive producer on Amazon’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Reports indicate he is expected to reprise his character in the show’s second season, possibly in a limited capacity.

Originally named PlayerUnknowns Battlegrounds, the game launched in 2017 and has established seven Guinness World Records since its release. South Korean publisher Krafton first revealed plans to create film and television content for the franchise in 2020. LV3H, the entertainment arm of Krafton, is now actively developing and producing this new series as part of their broader expansion into original entertainment. This marks the latest addition to Netflix’s expanding portfolio of video game adaptations, which also includes projects for Assassin’s Creed, Gears of War, Minecraft, Magic: The Gathering, Clash of Clans, and Overcooked. No specific release date or production timeline has been disclosed for the upcoming series.
